These are composed of colors with a similar chromaticity or hue, so they blend together well. Photoshop is also capable of handling color palettes. The more bit size, the higher the quality. Each has a capacity for 256 shades of gray, so you can have much more diversity in the creation of an image if you create a 32-bit file (as opposed to a 16-bit file). The 16-bit files are more common on the web, while the 32-bit files are more common for professional work. You can also work with 16- and 32-bit files. If you import a.JPG file, it will be converted automatically by Photoshop to a.PSD file. You can import photos in a variety of formats into Photoshop, ., and.BMP. You can create or import a Photoshop file from any of the file formats shown in Figure 6-1.įigure 6-1. When you are working with Photoshop, you will likely work in the.PSD file format. In fact, it’s pretty hard for a vector-based image (like a.PDF or a.PSD) to look nearly as good as a raster image. This is why you often see images with the type “Created with Photoshop” on them. Raster images have the benefit of being easy to share-in fact, the bulk of images on the web are actually raster images, not vector images. Photoshop CS5 can only handle eight bits of gray scale, which means that a black pixel in Photoshop will be less than a gray pixel, even if they look the same in other programs. They are made up of pixels, where each pixel can be changed in scale and can have a color value. Raster images are non-vector-based formats such as.JPG.GIF, or.TIF files.
